The Red Brown Land/Looking Down. October, 2014.

As a dedicated minimalist cum Wabi Sabiist I have made these paintings looking down to have a presence, a potency with a certain aesthetic. They are loosely based impressions of anticipated Space Lift views of the Red-Brown land of Western Australia while referencing chains of Salt Lakes and the deforestation of the Land; they are views comparable to the aboriginal view. These are the lands that should be incare of Aboriginal Nations as their history is recorded in song, dance and imagery. These encaustic paintings looking down are proper in that both the ancient lands and encaustic painting go far back in time.

The making of these paintings is based on geomancy; ie. placement within a given space, as in rocks in a dry Japanese garden; Feng Shui; made with the audacious splashing, tipping, dumping and brushing of hot liquid paints onto the painting surface so creating the beauty of natural chance with the overlapping of the rational and the random. The paintings are made of raw pigments suspended in virgin beeswax on 18 oz hessian on 1.2mm aluminium as encaustics.

The references to salt lakes are not copies of salt lakes, merely random references that assume identities of their own. In these Modern Times of the High Rise there is a loss of contact with the earth so Red and Orange are required in our lives and d€cor; these auspicious paintings will bring happiness, harmony with good luck.
