Unusual Japanese paulownia woodchest displaying fine metalwork and colour with iron locks in the shape of money pouches, particularly unusual because of the 2 cash drawers.

The square metal handles indicate a late Edo period example c 1840

Multi-purpose storage cabinet, custom made from fine quality zelkova (keyaki) wood: matched TAMAMOKU grain panels in the upper sliding doors. Fine urushi lacquer finish which just gets better with age. Bought 20 years ago and in a private collection until now. Unprocurable from the present Japanese market.
