Staircase chests- Kaidan dansu

Japanese Kaidan dansu - staircase chest   Late Edo period c 1830

Unique to Japan, these stair chests (kaidan dansu) were built for access to another storey  or mezzaine in both country and town houses negating the need for stairs to be part of the traditional house structure.
